As we reflect on October (aka Zambia’s Independe

As we reflect on October (aka Zambia’s Independence month) we celebrate one of our biggest milestones since Everyday Lusaka began in 2018: exhibiting at the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in London. 🇿🇲✨ 
Our Special Projects booth “The Inherited Counter-Archive” paid tribute to Zambia’s photographic history through two pioneering figures: the late Prabhubhai Vilas (Fine Art Studios & Photo Art Studios) and Alick Phiri (Kwacha Photo Studios). 
Much like their studios (and the Everyday Lusaka Gallery) our booth was buzzing with visitors streaming in and out over the four days. From the Zambian diaspora in London to photography lovers, we were honoured to share this moment with so many. We also met Ms. Mazoka, High Commission of Zambia to London, and Belgian rapper Damso! 
One of the highlights was having Mrs. Vilas in the space listening to the soundscape that featured interviews of her late husband. Her presence, along with the Vilas family, brought the exhibition together. She passed away 10 days after this event, and we are honoured to have her witness and celebrate the legacy that she was part of. 
Another highlight was that “Lusaka Street” - by Alick Phiri & Sana Ginwalla (shortlisted for the Aperture First Photobook Award) was the best-selling title at the 1-54 bookshop!

Our gratitude to Stranger’s House Gallery, Misha Maseka, Abdimalig Ibrahim, Maingaila Muvundika, Natalie Chipalabela, Albert Josiah, Jerrell Cumberbatch, Sarah Wechselberger, Ivana Blagojević, Dorris Kofi, Thero Makepe, Jenni Skinner, Sashi Kambeu and many more!

As we reflect on the @154artfair, we’re celebrating the amazing reviews and press coverage Everyday Lusaka Gallery has received so far. Our Special Projects booth “The Inherited Counter-Archive” curated by @sanaginwalla featured the work of Alick Phiri and the @zambiabelonging counter-archive.

This marked the first time a Zambian gallery has been present at the 1-54 fair. We are incredibly pleased to participate as a gallery from the Southern African region. Thank you to everyone who visited, supported, and shared this journey with us!

The Fine Art Studios photographic collection gave rise to the emergence of Zambia Belonging – a counter-archive founded by Ginwalla. Phiri’s work now resides in the collection, alongside over 1000 other found and contributed photos from Zambia.

Join us for a photo walk in the Lusaka CBD with British-Zambian photographer Sein!

Sein (pronounced like Sign) is a Lusaka born British raised photographer. Predominantly using 35mm & 120mm film, he aims to uncover the depth and beauty in the ordinary, revealing the vibrant culture and human bonds that inspire his work. Through these images, he hopes to share his perspective of the art of capturing life as it unfolds.

Everyday Lusaka started as a photography platform in 2018 to challenge conversations and perceptions of the city beyond the conventional photography found in Zambia.

This photowalk aligns with the ethos of sharing the banal yet beautiful moments of daily life in Lusaka and will be followed by a group discussion around the many ways in which these moments can be shared.

His work subverts traditional portrayals of being, offering layered, imaginative narratives that challenge conventional notions of identity, truth, and societal roles.

Join us on Saturday 4th October for the opening of “Mwaiseni Mukwai” a solo exhibition by Maingaila Muvundika curated by Sana Ginwalla.

In “Mwaiseni Mukwai”, Muvundika explores the family album as a site where a loose curation of collective memory stretches beyond generations. Whether tattered, fragmented or intact, the photographs act as objects of memory, activated by the many stories that surround the moment captured.

Grappling with the fraught relationship many Black Zambians have with the camera – even in present times – Muvundika asks: how does the photograph become a tool of collective preservation and documentation? In a society where a public image must be constructed, what is censored and what is shared?

Amidst this, notions of loss, erasure, self-determined representation are evoked across photographs, collages and linocut prints. The passage of time is composed with textures of intentional damage and materialities of the family photograph.

Drawing from his own family album, the Zambia Belonging counter-archive, and the Cambridge University Libraries, “Mwaiseni Mukwai” is an invitation of the public into the private, where moments familiar to us all – but largely kept from public view – are made visible as an act of collective remembrance.

We hosted year 11 Art students from Lake Road on 26th September. The visit was part of their arts curriculum to help them learn more about art spaces in Lusaka.

We are incredibly excited to be exhibiting as a Special Project in this year’s edition of 1-54 – the first and only international art fair dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora.

With works by Alick Phiri and Sana Ginwalla, we present “The Inherited Counter-Archive” which explores the history of Indian-Zambian diaspora in Zambia, particularly through photographic studios. “The Inherited Counter-Archive” reimagines the historic Fine Art Studios which was founded by Gujarati artist Prabhubhai Vilas. Vilas was a mentor of Alick Phiri, and his work at Fine Art Studios gave rise to the emergence of Zambia Belonging – a counter-archive founded by Ginwalla – where Phiri’s work now resides alongside over 1000 other found and contributed photos from Zambia.
