Happy Africa Freedom Day! Today we also celebrate one month since opening the Everyday Lusaka Gallery ✨

Over the past few weeks, we have had hundreds of visitors passing through the space. From students, musicians, artists, vendors, and commuters, the gallery’s location attracts a foot traffic that allows art to intersect in the everyday lives of Lusakans.

It’s been an incredibly exciting first month of meeting so many interesting residents of this city who are all patrons of the arts in one way or the other.

While we are closed today to reflect and rest, we look forward to welcoming you to the gallery in the coming weeks.

The gallery is open Tues-Thurs from 10-15hrs, and Saturdays 10-16hrs. Sundays and Fridays open by appointment (DM us).

Thank you to all of our guests who attended the opening of the Everyday Lusaka Gallery last weekend!

The curator of William B. Miko writes that ‘Who Am I - Here or There’, “is a human history of a young artist and curator Sana Ginwalla, travelling in time and space… Sana is an Indian born in Zambia, whose family originally comes from India and Burma.”

“In Zambia we call all people of Indian origin as ‘Bamwenye’ – basically whose professional careers are mainly assumed to be commercial trade, running shops of different merchandise. However, this is a race of people who are present in every aspect of Zambian life, offering technical and masonry skills, and services in medicine, civil service, agriculture, education and construction from the colonial days till present. It is from these varied professional families that Sana Ginwalla has uniquely emerged as a creative artist and curator, geared to tell the Indian-Zambian experience through a visual lens – a story hardly paid attention to.

The screenprinted photographs in ‘Who Am I – Here or There’ were printed in India on industrial linen spun in a power-loom. The cotton on which this fabric was printed on is commonly known in Bombay as ‘Manjarpatta’, and interestingly, Ginwalla’s last name hails from the cotton ginning factory that her ancestors operated in Gujarat.

The images in the exhibition are from prints, negatives and film stills that Sana scanned from her own family archives, but also from images she salvaged from the historic Fine Art Studios on Chachacha Road that was established in the mid 1950s.

Sana Ginwalla is unveiling history of not only her family but that of Zambia and India’s relationship.”

Highlights from our opening night…

Thank you to everyone who made this night possible. From all the behind the scenes preparations, to the guests and patrons of the arts whose gave us their time on a Saturday night, it was incredibly encouraging and affirming to see the support that Everyday Lusaka has garnered over the years.

The gallery space, as the Indian-Zambian founder of Everyday Lusaka Sana Ginwalla expressed in her speech, is a contention to the conventional spaces that we would expect to encounter art in Lusaka. It is an act of her “intellectual gangsterism”, as described by the curator Mr. William B. Miko.

As Zambia turns 60 this year, he writes that there isn’t a more opportune moment to ignite the fire of travelling in time, space and history, to ask ourselves as Sana Ginwalla does in this solo exhibition: ‘Who Am I, Here or There?’

He also writes that as we reflect on our journey to independence, we should “be reminded that the Indian community in Zambia were essential and crucial players to the liberation movement as Zambia fought for independence.”

‘Who Am I, Here or There?’ is a rare insight into Ginwalla’s own family archives and migration into Zambia, inviting us all to reconsider what it means to be Zambian.

On Saturday 27th of April, we were most privileged

On Saturday 27th of April, we were most privileged to have several dignitaries present to officially open the doors to the Everyday Lusaka Gallery.

Our guest of Guest of Honour was the High Commissioner of India to Zambia, Mr. Ashok Kumar. We also were graced by the attendance of Mr. Fumba Chama, the Permanent Secretary Ministry Of Youth, Sports & Arts, Mr. Tilyenji Kaunda, Mr. Matongo Matamwandi, the CEO of Zambia Tourism Agency and of course, the artist @sanaginwalla’s parents, Yunoos, Naseema and Salma Ginwalla and family. The presence and support of these special guests is highly appreciated as we stride into this new chapter!

The curator of the exhibition, Mr. William Bwalya Miko, was also the Master of Ceremonies who brilliantly arranged for the legendary Pontiano Kaiche to colour the festivities of the evening with an engaging performance, including several classic Indian songs that he sang in Hindi! 🇮🇳 🎶 🇿🇲

It is with great pleasure to share that we now have an Everyday Lusaka Gallery, which opens TOMORROW on Saturday 27th April!

Located in the pulse of Lusaka’s business district, in a modest space of the historic EW Tarry building on Cairo Road’s north end, the gallery situates itself alongside the conceptual positioning of Everyday Lusaka’s ethos.

We are honoured to have our inaugural exhibition “Who Am I, Here or There?” curated by Mr. William B Miko. The exhibition is a culmination of Everyday Lusaka founder Sana Ginwalla’s artworks and archives that are homed in our Zambia Belonging counter-archive. Ginwalla’s practice is an exploration of how we build and reconcile our relationships, representations and sense of belonging to various spaces.

We hope to see you this Saturday at 16:30hrs as we celebrate this huge milestone of opening our first physical space! The gallery location can be found in the link in our bio!

Corner shops are a convenient fixture in any neighbourhood as you don’t always have the capacity to make a dash to mall to get your quick fixes.

One my way to work after getting one of these quick fixes, I noticed a bike with some confectioneries in the back, evidently making a delivery.

I loved the green and red colour combination. It was only after the fact that I realised that the mosquito on the wall looked like it was having a feast, the comical nature of it made me love the image even more.

I’ve always been very saddened by dogs having to be locked up all day because they are a danger to people who may not know them even though that’s the design and conditioning they’ve been purposely put through.

The feeling of being trapped and wanting to get out of a situation that is beyond your control is something I think a lot of us can relate to.

Balas prove a little threat to the safety of any pedestrian in their vicinity when they are in motion. You’re constantly worried whether you’ll make it through without your knees getting injured by one one them. For this reason, I had never really spent anytime to really look at them as a fixture of town because I’m often avoiding them for my safety.

However, one afternoon I was in a taxi on Independence Avenue and saw a number of balas chained up. Stationary and unthreatening, leaning against the wall, I was able to take in the beautiful colour they all had.

Salaula is a characteristic part of CBD streets. Some time ago, there was always an attractive display wherever you looked, with the vendors being hauled out of the space. In recent years, this vibrancy became less prominent.

However, this particular array of fabrics caught my eye. The stall had an intense shot of colour and multitude of patterns to observe in a minimal amount of space. This aesthetic was a mirror of the bustling context I was in, which led me to document the scene.

GREEN FOR GO, CAIRO ROAD, 2023.

“Lusaka as a landscape is very special to me. I’ve grown up here. Most things that are familiar to me are here. It’s the easiest place for me to immerse myself in. However, for so long, identifying a way to capture this city had eluded me.

My usual photographic practice always involves a lot of setting up and capturing “the moment”, but a different approach had to be developed in documenting the city.

The banal was what was infront of me, and I had to work with it – whether it was a table at salaula or a collapsed traffic light. Thus, My Extra Lens was born.

More often than not, traffic lights in Lusaka aren’t working. But this particular one I stumbled upon was just lying down on the ground in one of the busiest streets in the CBD – fully functional. Who knows how it got there but that’s what’s shapes my practice: capturing odd moments in everyday spaces.”

“Earlier this year, I was having my NRC replaced in Chilenje and was confronted with a seemingly unsightly building. Infrastructure in the city, for the most part, stays neglected until a serious issue arises. Walls never see a new coat of paint. Chunks of concrete fall out and years of dust become part of the fabric of the wall. You’d think you’re in a deserted place at times.

Any bureaucratic process can be cumbersome, so I had to keep myself preoccupied. As I anxiously waited for my NRC, I noticed some plants with dusty leaves growing right next to this wall. The varying shades of green and the crumbling wall really caught my attention.

If you let it, photography can pave way to create such sweet moments from whatever you have in front of you.”

“Going on vacation with my friends to the town of Siavonga has become a yearly tradition. The slow and quiet nature of the town contrasts heavily with the loud hustle and bustle of everyday Lusaka life. It affords me a break in reality. A year before this self-portrait was taken, where I’m sitting in the landscape was completely submerged under water. It was because of the declining water level of Lake Kariba at the time that we were able to access the shore.

The environment and I were both important subjects to this photograph… I was interested in creating an image that showed an interaction of how we are able to exist on different elements of nature, but also share how this novelty to me was just a way of life for the people of Siavonga.“

“Often times, the sacks used to cover vendor’s stalls are the standard blue tarpaulin, but this rare one on Freedom Way had such a beautiful slogan on it.

Usually, this isn’t something I would pay much mind to. However, I observed this sign during a period in my life where I was commuting daily. I would be in town during the early hours of the morning, when the road was still clear enough to gaze at all the structures that would soon become drowned out by the sounds and business of the day.”

TUTE, SOWETO MARKET, 2023.

This April (exactly 6 years since Everyday Lusaka sold postcards for the first time at the Dutch Reform Market in April 2018), we will be posting all 10 images from our most recent postcard series!

We celebrated Everyday Lusaka’s 6th anniversary this year by collaborating with Lusaka based photographer Maingaila Muvundika to produce our 6th batch of postcards. We hadn’t made new ones since 2019, so we are super excited to share this series with you 🤩

Shooting self-portrait and editorial style images for the past 9 years, Mainga soon began exploring documentary photography. He developed @myextralens as a space to develop his keen observant eye of the banality and beauty that Lusaka has to offer.

The above imaged, titled “Tute”, was taken in Soweto Market. Mainga writes that “Zambian markets are always a chaotic place to be in, especially during the rainy season. However, I’ve always been fascinated with how marketers set up their stalls and arrange their produce. There’s a meticulous attention that I can never put my finger on.

As visually exciting as markets are, they’re not a place I often take my camera as most people are very ‘camera averse’ and I don’t really blame them. Therefore, this image was taken on my phone which presented a different set of challenges.

As Ba Beatrice and I were purchasing tute, the light touched in a manner that almost made it golden. As the stall keeper extended his arm covered in tute residue, I took this image. The pop of blue just tied everything together.”
